چکیده

Lepidocrocite was synthesized from the oxidation of FeC12 solutions with and without soluble Si and at various Fe(II) concentrations and pH. Pure well crystallized lepidocrocite was only obtained if COz was excluded (to prevent goethite formation) and if pH was kept between 5 and 7 (to prevent maghemite and ferrihydrite formation), Si in solution prevented crystallization of lepidocrocite with increasing Si/Fe atomic ratio (varied between 0 and 0-156) and at the same ratio with decreasing pH. Most of the Si added is probably included in the lepidocrocite and ferrihydrite structure (up to 4'4 % Si) and these Si contents are linearly correlated with the initial Si/Fe ratio. No indication from XRD and i.r. spectroscopy was found for changes in the lepidocrocite structure due to Si uptake. The ferrihydrite containing 4.35 ~ Si showed a broad Si-O-stretching vibration which in contrast to pure silica (1080 cm-1) is shifted to lower frequencies (940 cm-1) indicating some Si-O-Fe bonds.

The mineralogic transformation of ferrihydrite induced byheterogeneous reaction with bioreduced anthraquinonedisulfonate (AQDS) and the role of phosphate

Bioreduced anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AH2DS; dihydro-anthraquinone) was reacted with a 2-line, Si-substituted ferrihydrite under anoxic conditions at neutral pH in PIPES buffer. Phosphate (P) and bicarbonate (C); common adsorptive oxyanions and media/buffer components known to effect ferrihydrite mineralization; and Fe(II)aq (as a catalytic mineralization agent) were used in comparative exp...

The Effect of Co2 and Oxidation Rate on the Formation of Goethite versus Lepidocrocite from an F/~(ii) System at Ph 6 and 7

To investigate the influence of carbonate on the formation of goethite and lepidocrocite, ~200 samples were synthesized by oxidizing FeC12 solutions with air/CO2 gas mixtures at ambient temperature and pH 6 and 7. The proportion of lepidocrocite in the lepidocrocite/goethite mixtures (Lp/(Lp+ GO) decreased from 100 to 0% with increasing [HCO~] in solution and with decreasing average oxidation r...

Biotransformation of two-line silica-ferrihydrite by a dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducingbacterium: Formation of carbonate green rust in the presence of phosphate

The reductive biotransformation of two Si-ferrihydrite coprecipitates (1 and 5 mole % Si) by Shewanella putrefaciens, strain CN32, was investigated in 1,4-piperazinediethanesulfonic acid-buffered media (pH 7) with lactate as the electron donor. Anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate, an electron shuttle, was present in the media. Experiments were performed without and with PO4 3 (P) (1 to 20 mmol/L) in ...

Fe(II) reduction of pyrolusite (β-MnO2) and secondary mineral evolution

Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) are the two most common redox-active elements in the Earth's crust and are well known to influence mineral formation and dissolution, trace metal sequestration, and contaminant transformations in soils and sediments. Here, we characterized the reaction of aqueous Fe(II) with pyrolusite (β-MnO2) using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, aqueous Fe and Mn analyses...

Interaction mechanisms and kinetics of ferrous ion and hexagonal birnessite in aqueous systems

BACKGROUND In soils and sediments, manganese oxides and oxygen usually participate in the oxidation of ferrous ions. There is limited information concerning the interaction process and mechanisms of ferrous ions and manganese oxides. The influence of air (oxygen) on reaction process and kinetics has been seldom studied. Because redox reactions usually occur in open systems, the participation of...
